Week One : Frankenstein

Gothic is a style of writing that had become most popular in the 18th century. This form of fiction was characterized by elements of fear and death. Key gothic elements presented within Frankenstein include the atmosphere and setting, such as the dungeons and crypts; as well as, the dark descriptive language and tone. Although, the strongest depiction of gothic nature within Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, can be argued to be expressed through Frankenstein’s monster. Frankenstein’s monster often experiences isolation and abandonment. These themes fall into the emotional category of ‘gothic’ heavily due to its emotionally distressing aspects.

Gothic Romanticism is a genre that assists the reader in understanding what it means to be human. The topic of creating new forms of life has been argued for decades. Morals play a big role in the decision-making process. It’s a scary conversation piece. But, Victor had an impulsive nature. His concerning ambition to reanimate death tests the idea of ‘playing God’. Victor never pondered if his creation would be a threat to civilization. Instead of taking responsibility for his actions, he simply abandons the creature. Being somewhat of a father figure, abandonment was not the correct approach to the situation. Frankenstein’s monster was continuously alienated afterwards. Due to the monster’s daunting appearance, it was difficult for him to integrate with society. The monster becomes distant, making the audience feel sympathy for the lost creature.

Shelley tackles gothic themes within her masterful work of horror fiction, while also reflecting her own familiar environment. Her novel’s protagonist, Victor Frankenstein, wished to prove that he could create something that could outlive himself and Shelley desired to do the same, through literature.

BY THE WAY, I thought that the in-class film, Young Frankenstein directed by Mel Brooks, was incredibly hilarious.
.....
Here are some ‘generic’ reanimated corpses (NOT ZOMBIES)-inspired readings/shows/movies that I like besides Frankenstein, The Lazarus Effect, Flatliners (2017), AND The Crow.
